Sometimes the best restaurant discoveries happen after church on a Sunday afternoon.
That was the case when my wife and I made our first visit to Rey Azteca in Lake Wylie. Tucked away on the side of a medium-sized shopping and business center near the lake, it's easy to miss if you're not looking for it. Fortunately, we were.
Like many of our dining outings, this was another post-church stop. While we frequently enjoy Mexican food, it's usually a dinner choice rather than lunch. Rey Azteca quickly proved it can handle either.
We opted for outdoor seating. Part of our view overlooked Lake Wylie, while another portion looked toward a nearby auto repair shop complete with a few relics scattered around the lot. It wasn't exactly waterfront dining, but the pleasant spring weather more than compensated.
Service was excellent from the start. Fresh chips and salsa arrived quickly and were among the better versions we've had recently. More importantly, they didn't let the basket run empty, keeping both the chips and salsa replenished throughout the meal. That's always a good sign at a Mexican restaurant.

I paired mine with an unsweetened iced tea.
My wife ordered the Lunch Taco Salad, traditionally served in a crispy flour tortilla shell with chicken or beef, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and sour cream. She customized hers with beans and thoroughly enjoyed it. The portion was generous, and the crispy shell provided the perfect crunch.

I selected a shrimp quesadilla featuring flour tortillas grilled and stuffed with plump shrimp, cheese, lettuce and sour cream, served alongside rice and beans. The shrimp were plentiful, the tortillas nicely grilled, and the entire dish was flavorful from start to finish. It was one of those meals that leaves you thinking about ordering it again before you've even finished.

One surprise was the size of the restaurant itself. From the outside, Rey Azteca appears relatively modest. Once inside, however, we discovered a much larger dining room than expected. Multiple booths and separate seating areas create a comfortable, cozy atmosphere that feels welcoming rather than cavernous.
By the time lunch ended, we found ourselves wishing Rey Azteca was a little closer to home. If it were, it would undoubtedly become one of our regular dinner destinations.
For Lake Wylie residents, that convenience is already built in.
For the Undercover Diner, it's definitely worth the drive.
