Hidden in plain sight along Charlotte Highway, this neighborhood gem combines creative dishes, attentive service and surprisingly reasonable prices.

Another family outing for the Undercover Diner crew — this time joined by my wife and daughter at Zora Food & Wine in Lake Wylie.
Located in a strip center next to Starbucks along Charlotte Highway, Zora might be easy to drive past without realizing what's inside. That would be a mistake. Once you step through the door, you'll find one of the area's more impressive dining experiences.
We've heard good things about Zora for a while and finally decided to give it a try. The verdict? This place is fantastic.
Our server, Taffy, was outstanding from start to finish. Friendly, attentive and knowledgeable, she helped make an already enjoyable meal even better.
We started with a few drinks. My daughter ordered a Hugo Spritz, which was the only surprise of the evening. It wasn't prepared quite the way she expected.

My wife enjoyed a well-made Cosmopolitan, while I opted for Eagle Rare bourbon. As bourbon enthusiasts know, Eagle Rare used to be fairly easy to find, but these days it lives up to its name.

We also enjoyed a glass of Prisma Pinot Noir. It's an economical wine at retail and, like many Chilean wines, offers exceptional value for the quality.
For food, we decided to order sharables.
The Artichoke & Spinach Dip arrived with fresh vegetables and warm focaccia bread and was an excellent way to begin the meal.

The Smoked Salmon Flatbread was mainly my selection and featured cream cheese, capers, pickled red onions, arugula and a balsamic glaze. The combination of flavors worked beautifully and made this one of the highlights of the evening.

My wife ordered the She Crab Soup, which she thoroughly enjoyed.

My daughter gravitated toward the Zora Truffle Mac & Cheese, a rich combination of white cheddar, Gouda, Parmesan and truffle oil. Creamy, flavorful and indulgent, it easily lived up to its billing.

What impressed us most was the overall value. The food quality, service and atmosphere all exceeded expectations, yet prices remained relatively reasonable.
Since this first visit, we've returned and had an equally positive experience. That's often the true test of a restaurant. Zora passed with flying colors.
One additional tip: They accept reservations, which is always appreciated. Interestingly, despite the quality, it hasn't felt overwhelmingly crowded during our visits.
The Undercover Diner gives Zora Food & Wine a strong recommendation for anyone looking for an upscale yet approachable dining experience in the Lake Wylie area.
